A rather difficult book to get involved with. The author uses a great deal of names and places that are hard to comprehend. I was more interested in finding out how Yosemite was discovered and the beauty of the area and the reaction of the first white people to see this beautiful national park. It did this a little bit but it was lost in the constant discussion of the Indian war against the white man as he invaded their native land. You have to be a dedicated historian to appreciate this book. Not for the average reader. It was more of a dissertation for a PH.D. than a good read.Product details

This story is a running history of the miners and trappers moving into land owned by the local Indian tribes in California. When the different Indian tribes fight back they end up losing their land and offered life on the reservation. A side story is how Yosemite Valley was discovered by the military looking for run a way Indians. The ending is of the Yosemite Valley becoming a tourist destination and the wonders of vegetation, trees and animals of that area.
The discovery of Native Americans in California that were left behind buy the Spainsh before the whites got there were at home in the Yosemtie national park. Now they were moved out buy force. It was a book about war and capatalism at is finest.
First person account of “discovery “ of Yosemite Valley & Teneya & Tuolumne areas, written by an intelligent keen observer with a pretty clear writing style. Occasionally goes off the deep end with poetry. Not as excellent as Brewer’s Up and Down California, or LeConte’s Ramblings Through the High Sierra, but an interesting read for Sierra Nevada history.
His chapter on geology is amusing from the perspective of 140 years on, but some of that is still basically true. Interesting to read a contemporary account of the debate between Muir and Whitney on the origin of Yosemite Valley.
Tremendously descriptive recorded first view by a white American. It makes me want to visit that area just to see for myself if it really is that awe inspiring. His descriptive language is incredible. So sad we removed the Native Americans from their little piece of Heaven.
I love these types of historical narratives; this is a classic example of the learned member of the expedition recording pertinent details for posterity. Having had family in the Central Valley and foothills region, I recognized many names of landmarks and was interested in how they originated. The author's ruminations on the native peoples are his alone, and reflect the manifest destiny notion of the times. It is a thoughtful, reverent recollection of a rougher time in Western history, and is required reading for anyone wanting to learn more about the Yosemite area and its rich history, both natural and anthropomorphic.
This was a very interesting story, particularly having been taken as a child on family vacations to many of the sites and sights featured in this book. I remember with great fondness camping on the shore of Lake Tenaya, and the fishing expedition to May Lake. But there were parts of the story that wandered to events that had nothing to do with Yosemite as a region of California, the war involving the Yosemite Indians, or the settling of that part of California, and thereby becoming an extended travelogue of the author's experiences.
Anyone interested in the early days of the discovery of Yosemite and the way the Indians were treated and banished from Yosemite to make room for the miners and homesteaders will find this a fascinating book. Written by Dr Bunnel the official medical officer of the Mariposa Battalion, it is a eyewitness account of the 1st white men to lay eyes on Yosemite Valley , also how, one night around the campfire this handful of men came up with the name of this unique and beautiful valley.
